Membership in Ordo Templi Orientis is based upon a tiered initiation system. Primarily, candidates advance to successive degrees through the satisfactory completion of associated ordeals and instructions. Ultimately, advancement to the highest degrees is by invitation only.

For, we do not take our initiations lightly and require that each candidate for non-invitational degrees acquire the signatures of two members of at least the degree of application to serve as sponsors vouching for the candidate.
The first degree, named Minerval, is actually numbered "0" in sequence as it prefaces all the full degrees and allows the candidate to participate in the order as a "welcome guest." Having only partial rights and responsibilities, a Minerval can experience the O.T.O. as an observer, surveying the order until the decision is made for a more formal commitment in the subsequent degrees.
